The quiet, shy Maria somehow has opened up Manny to verbally express his feelings and to calm the anger.  And even she is only stuttering a little while speaking to Manny. 
Maria strikes a chord with Manny explaining the benefit of Manny's best friend being in love with Baby. 
With an end result of bonding between two unlikely characters. 

The other part of the story is fast approaching, with only a handful more pages til the other side of this story that will continue it down a line of great importance.
